Etymology

From the Latin suffix -ātiō. This suffix was formed from verbs of the first conjugation (-āre), and is therefore a variety of the more general -tiō (from which Dutch -tie).

  1. Forms action nouns. Many such nouns derive from or are otherwise paired with verbs of Latinate origin that are suffixed with -eren. This suffix is then replaced by -atie.

      accumuleren + ‎-atie → ‎accumulatie (accumulation)
    3. A state or quality
